Artistic Research
I am also expanding new methodologies for artistic research, now considered one of the fastest growing area in the arts. Artistic research engages interdisciplinary methodologies that enable us to create new knowledge through the construction of novel subjects combined with observation of creative processes. Arts research engages modes of creative process to construct new forms of inquiry and knowledge and incorporates the artist’s creative experience as one of its principle outcomes.
It disseminates results and new knowledge not only through exhibitions but also through publications, journals, conferences, panel discussions, and workshops. I recently lectured on arts research projects at Cambridge University; University of the Arts London and co-chaired the Young Researchers Conference hosted by American Center for Mongolian Studies and the Mongolian National University for Education.
Twenty years ago I founded FormLAB (FormLaboratory.com) a arts research series to examine “knowledge chains” in artist collaboration. As US Department of State ZERO1: Art and Technology Artist I will build workshops overseas.
I serve on the Editorial Board for ProjectAnywhere (University of Melbourne and Parsons School of Art, New York) and chaired their 2018 new media panel at the New School, New York. I have also served on the International Committee for the College Arts Association and at Teachers College, Columbia University have been examining new art curriculum designs for art schools. Recently books include Going Beyond: Art as Adventure (2018), “FormLAB: Interfacing Technology with Site” (2019) ISEA International Symposium of Electronic Art, Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, Korea and “The Artist-centric model in museums” in Looking to New Institutional Models: China’s Cultural Landscape by Mid-Century (2018), Long Museum, Shanghai.
